NeuroStar TMS Therapy is available to patients by prescription only and is delivered under the sypervision of a psychiatrist.

First Treatment Session
A patient’s first treatment with the NeuroStar TMS Therapy sysetem could last up to an hour and a half. The treating clinician will first perform a test to identify the patient’s motor threshold. The motor threshold is the amount of magnetic field strength applied to the motor cortex, which results in an involuntarily movement of the right thumb. This test is important because it identifies the magnetic field strength to be used in the treatment. This field strength is customized to each patient to deliver the correct treatment dose.

After this initial procedure, the treating clinician will move the treatment coil to the treatment position. The physician will then administer TMS Therapy over a 37 minute period. The device will deliver rapid magnetics pulses in 30 second intervals. Pulses will feel like a tapping sensation which most patients tolerate well. If the treatment is uncomfortable, the physician can make adjustments in an effort to reduce this discomfort. During the treatment session, patients can relax in the treatment chair, read a book, or watch TV. After the treatment session, patients can immediately return to their normal routine, including driving.

Subsequent Treatment Sessions

Most future treatment sessions will last 37 minutes; however, the physician may periodically repeat the motor threshold test. This test will increase the time for that particular treatment session. Neurostar TMS Therapy is typically administered as a treatment course over a four to six week period.
